This piece was made for the first exhibition of InterLace Oceania at Logan Gallery – 15 March to 29 April 2023. The exhibition was self titled InterLace. We are thankful for the funding assistance received for this exhibition and the associated public programs from Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF). RADF is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Logan City Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland.
InterLace Oceania was founded in August 2020 in the midst of a pandemic to allow this unique group of dedicated lacemakers to connect, share, explore and further the development and public awareness of contemporary lacemaking in Australasia. InterLace Oceania aims to support the individual pursuits of each lace artist as well as showcasing the possibilities of lace in art through collective group exhibitions. We welcome emerging and established artists of all ages who practice a multitude of lace techniques and we thrive off the dynamic this brings to the group.
The exhibition featured a number of works from members of the group. Images for these can be found on the InterLace Facebook page and Instagram page.
Emancipation of Plans is one of my contributions to the exhibition. It is made from enameled copper wire, cotton and synthetic thread sourced from my stash at home. I consciously did not buy any new materials for this piece.
Emancipation Of Plans is a reflective piece capturing the moment when one lets go of social and personal expectations and embraces a life of chaos, change and constant interruption that accommodates neurodiversity. It was created with no formal planning and made in the pockets of time spared between my role as a carer and family life. It highlights the beauty hidden within the chaos, complexity, grief and adaptation. It also highlights how lucky we are to live in a country and era where we can be ourselves and ‘display’ our unique ‘collars’ should we desire.
